Our annual Maino-Lautzenheiser camping trip resumed this summer for a weekend at Navajo Lake, UT. With scorching temperatures in Las Vegas, the mountain air (although still warm) was a much appreciated reprieve from the valley’s heat.

While driving through southern Utah a day early (because why not?), we stopped at a rest area with the intent to stay for a short visit to let the dogs out and use the restroom. Our truck, however, had other plans. We learned, thanks to a mobile mechanic, that our fuel pump was failing. Thankfully, Cedar City was just 10 miles north of where we had stopped; we took a chance and drove north. While driving, we reserved a dog-friendly hotel and believe it or not, the hotel was adjacent to a mechanic. They ordered the fuel pump and installed it for us the next morning!

We enjoyed beautiful weather while we set up camp and waited for the Mainos to arrive. Despite its over 9,000 ft. elevation, Navajo Lake was quite warm. The dogs and kids had wonderful time playing on the rocky and mucky beaches.

On Saturday, Johnny took everyone on the boat to fish. I stayed on shore with the dogs; I figured it was a few too many bodies aboard. While they fished, I attempted to paddle board with both dogs. It didn’t last long, but we did it! I had two dogs on the board, while I paddled on my knees. Once Pepper, realized she could jump off into the shallow water, she was a gonner. Topo wasn’t far behind.

After lunch in Duck Creek, we visited an ice cave. After an adventurous climb down, we enjoyed the MUCH cooler temperatures before climbing back out.

While at camp, the kids were busy riding their bikes, finding secret hideouts, and playing in the lake. They had a blast exploring together as they have become much more independent.
