Valley of Fire

We spent a beautiful, MLK weekend camping at Valley of Fire. I made the reservations months prior with the realization that I may be cancelling them if the weather was bad; we lucked out with a perfect, sunny, unseasonably warm January weekend.

After arriving Saturday afternoon, we set up camp and drove to our favorite area along Fire Wave to enjoy the sunset. Then we set out to do an evening hike at Mouses’s Tank along a State Park sponsored ‘night hike.’ They encouraged hikers to walk the tealight-lit path with headlamps shining discreet red lights. It was neat to hike at night, something we’ve never done.

Sunday, we explored the Fire Canyon area and spent time with Lili, Brian, and Nolan, who joined us for the afternoon and stayed for s’mores. It was great to have some company (both for the kids and adults).

Valley of Fire is the perfect long-weekend campsite: just an hour away, full of endless red rocks and beauty, where the scenery or excitement of seeing a bighorn sheep never gets old.
